Very good question!! At the last COE-2005 in Phoenix, Greg A. Premetz, Scott Hazel, Paul Webb and I discuss this very question at a length. Though, we did not come to any conclusive solutions, we decided to take the following line of actions:
1. Since some of the information and codes could be proprietary, it is difficult for anyone or any group/organization to contribute it all. Furthermore most of such KBE stuffs are tied to certain proprietary application, and therefore hard (it takes time for anyone) to decipher and decouple.

2. We jointly (KBE-PIC Chairs and KBE-DPC Chairs) felt that it is, however, a good idea to facilitate development of such a "KBE Best Practices in Modeling" document, if we could stretch ourselves from our normal COE-duty. The question was "who would do this?" and "how we would achieve this objective?" Will the COE administrations support this or help?

3. One of the actions at COE-2005, was that we request the COE to create a separate Focus Group devoted exclusively to KBE topics and KBE interest Group. With help from our great people at COE (such as John M. Switlik and Rich Perlman and William Fries and more), this seems to have been quickly materialized.

4. The second action item was for us to send out a request for an OPEN “CALL FOR KBE TIPS” to this FOCUS group and to solicit their help and participation in this matter. We felt that many of the organizations (our KBE work force), by trial and error, may have found “some KBE best practices.” They may have uncovered ample “modeling tips in KBE.” over the years. This may include tips on “how to use or create a feature in CATIA V5 via KBE” or to more general tips, such as, “how to make your KBE model more robust and morph-able?”

5. The team felt, that some of you (our KBE patrons/users at this site) may be willing to share those KBE tips/recommendations/practices, if we could give you due credit for your contributions – in-kind form – such as listing of “contributing article authorship names” and organization affiliation.

6. At COE, we may be able to find resources and support, to compile those “KBE tips and best practices” solicited into an edited COE-KBE Document. This will be the COE-KBE property. I am willing to put the volunteer time into this, or get the right volunteers involved, if you think (or hope) that you would be able to realize benefits from such a collective efforts.

7. The purpose of this memo is to ask this (KBE user-community at large), the following questions?

Do you think collectively compiling such a “KBE Best Practices” document is a good idea? Do you think you can contribute?
If we could compile such a “KBE Best Practices Document” what you would like to see in there?
Where and how can you help?
Are you willing to serve on the “Editorial Committee” for this Document, if we decide to proceed?
Please reply openly. Or if you do like to share your comments/ inputs privately, please reply to me individually.

Thanks for your continued support,

Brian,

I think that developing a “KBE Best Practices Document” is a great idea and highly necessary. There are so many different ways of implementing a KBE solution that it is not trivial to find the most robust, the simpler, etc.. - therefore a Best Practice Document would be of great help.
I agree that the use of proprietary corporate knowledge may slow down this iniative (1), but on the other hand, a collaborative work developed between different organizations willing to share experiences (and expertise) should give good results(6).
I'd like to participate of such initiative. I could contribute from the technical point of view, since we (KBE team) have been working with Knowledgeware for sometime. (although I believe I've gathered more questions than answers by now..).
How is this initiative going ? What is the next step ?

If you prefer to reply to me individually, please write to :jp.lirani@embraer.com.br

Cheers,

JP
