My question is reguarding Document Templates found in the Product Knowledge Template (PKT) license.

I have been experimenting with them but I do not have a complete grasp on how to make them work. My understanding is that they are basically a powercopy or a UDF but can be instantiated as parts in a product.

I know how to create powercopies and UDFs, so I have been able to make some document templates already. The problem I am having is when I instantiate the document template into a product, the instantiation geometry is copied into the new part and isolated instead of referencing the picks I made during instantiation.

The way I am trying to make this work is with a "skeleton" part in the assembly that contains all of the geometry that would control all of the other parts. I want to instantiate the document template(s) into the assembly and reference the set up geometry in the skeleton. Then I would be able to change various parameters in the skeleton to make the part(s) from document template morph. The only problem is after instantiation, all of the referenced geometry is copied and isolated in the new part (from the document template) and therefore wont update with a parameter change.

How do I make document templates reference geometry in another part without them isolating?

Is it possible for document templates to reference geometry in another part without them isolating?

Hope all of this makes sense... thanks in advance for any help!

BTW, I am using CATIA V5 R13 in case that makes a difference.

Try using external references to published geometry from another part for your geometric inputs in your template.

Also set the options (in tools->options->infrastructure->part infrastructure) to "keep link with selected object" and "only use published elements for external selection keeping link".

Thanks for the quick reply, my problem was the "keep link with selected object" setting in tools -> options...
