I can't answer your question directly (sorry!) but reading
this thread reminded me of a product we tried out for a
while with good results: StarNet's X-Win32.

We don't have WinFrame/WinStations and so didn't try
eXceed, but I can say that with X-Win32 it was easy to
obtain a full screen CDE desktop ready to run CATIA from.

No shading was available -- I think this is because the
hardware acceleration necessary isn't local to the PC we
were running X-Win32 from. We weren't too worried about
the lack of shading anyway; the intended use was for 2-D
drawing viewing and plotting.
