Well after a simple call with a CATIA Support Engineer,
I discovered why 3D shaded images won't work
with Exceed. It so happens that, according to the
support engineer, CATIA V4 was developed with
PHIGS (hp's graphics). OPENGL(sgi) and PHIGS came out
about the same time and were equally capable. Well, CATIA
uses PHIGS and the rest is history as to what is
now the defacto standard. Unless Hummingbird decides
to support PHIGS also with their Exceed 3D package,
we are stuck with wireframes.

The v4 install base is huge and I don't see why they
shouldn't go forth with a PHIGS solution.
