We find other applications we use are not usable with the latest version of Catia,

By the time these applications catch up, the next version of Catia comes out.

I was wondering if many companies find themselves in this situation and how they deal with it.

My suggestion was to just stay one release back on Catia.

My suggestion was dismissed, I was asked why I would want to use "obsolete" software.

I would hardly call Catia V5 R17 obsolete, I don't even think R15 is.

Was wondering if I could get some opinions here.

If u r a service provider then the customer (OEM) decides abt version/service pack etc details.. u just have to follow him....
I beleive OEMs have a detailed process of deciding which version to use and which to skip... and this detailed release process does involve all the stake holders and allied services/softwares.... If I am not wrong chrysler jumped from R14 to R16... and they are still there though R17 is available in market since a long time...

RUSSL1,

Typically there are two versions of CATIA V5 that are simultaneously supported - meaning defects can still be submitted. Currently, R17 and R18 are the supported versions.

As mentioned in the previous post, OEMs decide what level their customers must be at. If the OEM is using R17 and the customer is using R18, the OEM will not be able to open the R18 parts in R17. Therefore, it is important to stay at the OEM release and service pack level.

It sounds like you have an issue running the latest CATIA with other applications. In that case, it makes sense to stay at the recommended CATIA level, so all applications run smoothly. Keep in mind that even though R18 may be the latest release, R17 is still supported and Service Packs are available.

Not all companies move to every level. The bigger the company is, the more difficult it is to install every release. They may decide to install every other release (R14, R16, R18 or R15, R17, R19, etc.)

To further aid in your discussions, please see the ‘End of support dates’ on the PLM Technical Support website:

https://www-304.ibm.com/jct03004c/software/applications/plm/support/support.wss

It is under ‘Plan -> Product life cycle’.

Here is a snap shot of what is currently supported and end of support dates:

There is a way to use R17 files by converting in Catia

Utility + downward compatability. Your get a "Result" dumb solid, but you can output a file in R16, or 15, etc.

He may be on about third party softwares like adobe 3d or delcam's ps-exchange etc etc...

most of the 3rd party softwares that 'support' CATIA are a release behind the currently available one

If you really want to test a 3rd party translator, send it an assembly file. They fall apart with products, components, instances......
