Anybody have good recommendations for anti-virus software?  One that doesn't stop programs from working, slow down the computer, and just plain suck?

Thanks.

I am using ZoneAlarm Internet security suite @ home. Everything seems to be normal, no real complaints.

I use free AVG.
But they all seem to interupt my work more these days.

Vista is constantly stopping me to make sure I want to do what I just told it to do.

You can't survive without security though.

I don't think ZoneAlarm works on Vista x64 yet.

Nod32 Antivirus from ESET gets a big thumbs up from me.

Cheers.

Ditto for Nod32 from Eset.  It takes little resources and is pretty non-intrusive.  It also scans for spyware and malware, but not root kits that I'm aware of.  I replaced all Symantec products with Eset products.  The Eset suite (firewall, anti-virus, spam blocker, etc.) is a little more intrusive and you have to answer those annoying software firewall questions.  They offer a 30 day trial on all their products to see if you like them or not.

THANKS GUYS!

I had AVG 8.0 and it actually crashed my computer and gave me the blue screen of death. Took it to the shop- they just uninstalled AVG and everything's fine. I never thought anti-virus software could do something like that.

I guess I'll go with NOD32. I've heard that's very good.

I use the free AVG 7.5 on my laptop- and it never caused any problems. And I just use the Windows firewall.

I think I'll just get NOD 32 without the firewall. I think the Windows firewall should be good enough.

Lol, Jeez Bryan you have all the luck.
Here's another free one you might want to check into - http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html

You're telling me. But it's usually my fault. For instance, on Monday I was really tired, and pulled up the system calender/clock- thinking I was using outlook calendar. So, I changed the date forward to check something in October, closed it and began working, saving files, etc...

You can imagine my shock when I restarted my computer and NOTHING would work correctly!!!

I had to open each file with the date advanced, change date back and resave again!

I'm a real klutz with computers- and I know enough to get myself into trouble and not much more. Before I had my own business, all I really had to know was the CAD/CAM system- IT dept.'s took care of everything. In the last several years, I've had to learn E-mail, Internet, all that stuff pretty much on my own. It's been fun, and at times scary!

I've been in business since the early 80s. I bought PC APT in the mid 80s.
And I am seriously thinking about buying CATIA now.
When do you get V6 Bryan?

Brian,
Sometimes you get what you pay for. I don't use the free stuff, it works sort of but you will have 3 different free solutions working on your computer. If you are connected to high speed internet you need 3 things for security. 1) Firewall, 2) Antivirus, 3) Spyware.
In the last 5 years i have used 3 products. 1)Norton, 2)Webroot, 3)Zonealarm. Norton I found expensive and at the time i was using Norton for antivirus, zonealarm for firewall and need Webroot for the spyware. Now these 3 companies offer all in 1 packages. Norton again was pricey, Webroot worked fantastic but I didnt like the firewall as much as Zonealarm. This year I switched to Zonealarm which I picked up a 3 computer license from Bestbuy for $20 - some promotional thing. I renew my subscriptions every year and my PC runs flawless with little effort.

Derek

Avira free is running on my laptop and is somewhat of a resource hog, but it does scan for rootkits. My vote is still for Nod32. You don't even know it is running until it catches something or give you the occasional update notice.

Not sure how anybody could like ZoneAlarm Pro for a software firewall. I had it installed for three months even though I had a year's subscription. Everytime I blinked or breathed it asked me if I really wanted to. Not a problem the first time, but answering that question 900 times afterwards is quite frustrating (yeah, I do realize I blink and breath more than that in three months time and I did have the toggle to remember my answer set to on/yes/Always Remember My Answer). I do like ZA's interface though.

PC Apt was cool when it had the IGES to APT converter and road map generator. IT was like a mini NCL. Now, it's just an APT compiler just like mainframe Apt 360 (with enhancements) but for PC. No more graphics, sadly.

I have an APT compiler from Larry Jones. It's a full blown multi-axis compiler, but now graphics. Actually I wrote a program with it last week for a customer, because my machine was in the shop. Works great. So much you can do with a simple IF statement.

As far as V6 goes, I don't know if I'll ever go to V6. I might just stop the maintenance at R19 or R20 if it seems like a version I can live with for the next 10 years. If not, who knows...maybe I'll go backwards a little and go with a language based system.

There's just something extremely satisfying about programming in APT.

I have a lot of respect for APT, but I'll never go back.

I am so anxious to get my hands on V6 that I might buy it just so I can play with it.

Yeah, I could never just program in APT. This was a special case, where it was actually faster to just write a few lines of geometry, then a simple logical IF statement with some simple commands and program the geometry they needed much faster than going into Catia, creating a part, creating a product, setting up an axis, etc., etc., etc. But 99% of the time Catia is going to be 100X's faster.

Regarding V6- I didn't even realize it was going to have NC programming in it. I just can't wait for R19 and R20. They sound like they will be really great! I'll be at the webinar tomorrow at 8am my time.

Better re-read your license agreement - CATIA is typically sold as "right to use" rather than Maintenance. That means, stop paying, and you stop using. This has the advantage of making Expense rather than Capital, but it also means that you have to keep paying.

Jim,
Now you can go another 10 years with your current versions service pack without paying maintenance fees as I was told by a sales rep.

Yes, but you have to tell them first, and then pay one year's final maintenance. If you don't tell them it's the final payment and you are ending maintenance, then they don't have to support you.

Also, it's a 2 year license issued 5 times after the final payment. But realistically, the software will probably be obsolete in 10 years, if one stays at the current version.

Bryan - I can't find the CATIA License Terms and Conditions doc.  Is there a soft copy online?  If not, and if you have one handy, would you attach it to a reply, please?

TIA

I'd sure like to find out more about these Terms and Conditions as well.
Are they the same for everyone, or is that negotiable too?

Purchasing CATIA is a major decision so I need to do my homework.
