As we all know, there are areas of Catia manufacturing that can be improved.. The mechanism are here for enhancement requests at COE.
We all want to contribute. But I see a lot of frustrated programmers.
.
We are all, also very busy, in fact too busy to use this forum as much as we would like.
.
I have a proactive plan to do something about it.
What I propose is that create a small private group, and we communicate thru e-mail, and phone, net conference, and than get together with our collective ideas.
I have already gotten positive response from the few users that I have contact info on, and spoken to.
Dassault will listen. In December 2007, I discussed forming this small group with my Dassault regional sales manager. He assured me, that if I got this group of industry leaders formed, and created an agenda of enhancements needed in our humble opinions, that he would get us an audience with software developers from Dassault. We are thinking, 8-12 programmers is all we need.We all see the same things.
This is how I see starting the group
We can start with some conference calls. (we are all to busy to type in what a 30 minute phone session of ideas could yield ). . I see doing these teleconferences more than once a year. I think this would be more candid, than putting dirty laundry on the world wide web. (coe forum). I would be private.
.
Than we could do a web meeting like the ask the expert. Start with an agenda, and people can press 1 than 4 to talk. every one listens. Or perhaps meet in a centrally located area. I have a free donated conference room in down town LA, thanks to my brothers firm.
.
I see these main areas of concern as starting items for an agenda
.
(1) Having a way to get better documentation, more information on how the software works. Sometimes I am still not sure if I am doing something correctly, even after reading the doc's and trial and error, using COE. Getting actual insight into areas of confusion., that will lead to embellishment of the documentation.
http://www.coe.org/Collaboration/DiscussionForum/ActiveDiscussions/tabid/210/forumid/5/postid/112992/view/topic/Default.aspx.
(2) Swap a drive surface and other multiaxis flank issues

http://www.coe.org/Collaboration/DiscussionForum/ActiveDiscussions/tabid/210/forumid/5/postid/111901/view/topic/Default.aspx
(3) Improving the roughing routines to be more efficient, (air time) and better controls roughing for titanium.
Roughing Routine enhancements >>
http://www.coe.org/Collaboration/DiscussionForum/ActiveDiscussions/tabid/210/forumid/5/postid/114279/view/topic/Default.aspx
(4) Quality control on upward compatibility to new releases. See if we can get them to maintain programs and do regression testing. so often I hear R17 is buggy, or this service pack messes something up so I had to roll it back.
.
(5) More consistency between modules, things that work well in one module, added across the board.
.
(6) More tool axis choice between modules. If you want optimized lead, you are forced to use curve following, Add that tool axis to more modules.
.
(7) organization of PPR tree for nc programs

17) Cancelling an operation takes a ridiculously long amount of time.
18) Cancelling a "computation" takes even longer
19) Profile Contouring, it is stupid that when "new feature" is invoked, CATIA removes all but the start/end points. is it too over-the-top to think that it might "remove" all features? Plus, why do I have to double-click to get Profile Contouring to exit back to the operation screen after picking a start or end point?
20) How about a progress bar for batch and utility functions?
21) How about a glossary/dictionary for ALL of the CATIA error and warning messages? That way a programmer would have a little knowledge of the error/warning encountered.
22) Edge selection toolbar: build a line between points is initially "grayed-out", forcing the user to pick a non-point item before being allowed to create a line between 2 points why can't the Edge selection toolbar have the "build a line between points" initially available.
23) approach and retract macros: feedrate colors (namely rapid and approach) are not immediately shaded correctly in CATIA. Rapid could be purple initially, then after changing another feed, revert to its proper color. upon further investigation, the feed trace colors are initially "some color" after/upon contextually (RMB) the feed color reverts to its proper color
24) Save Management: It is very cumbersome to have to double-click on the “header seam” to see the entire filename and path
25) A more powerful “process table”, where the user could unlock feedrates (locked by “automatic compute from feeds and speeds&rdquo , as well as others offering more global changes to machining operations
The following contributed by Don Javier
Primus International - Walden's Division
26: Improve Roughing
Have Roughing respect the starting point more often. To often it ignores the starting location and starts where it wants.
I would like to see the “always stay on bottom” an option for “spiral” toolpath
Prevent the toolpath from moving around preexisting holes in your cgr.
Tool path jumps up a lot. Sometimes I will use pocketing because roughing jumps around to much.
27: Multi-Axis Flank Contouring
Need to be able to replace a drive surface without deleting most of your drives.
I would like to control my tool axis for my entire tool path. Example = I want two radial passes. I want my first pass with my tool axis straight and my last pass tanto fan or what ever I choose. The only way I can do this is by having two Machining operations one with fixed axis and second with Tanto Fan. If I have 10 levels that is a lot of copying and pasting.
28: Be able to add a holder and add it to any tool and not have to grab an entire assembly tool and all.
29: The resource list needs better organization.
have subfolders maybe Machines, Holders, Cutters
Be able to sort by part operation or tool number
I would like to be able to make my own subfolders example = “Tooling” or “Mag”
30: Include more In the “Activities process Table” such as “Offset on bottom” ect.
31: Improve “Analyze” in the video replay. On large parts a lot of times it will not even show excess or gouges and if it does it takes 10 plus minutes (even on 64bit machines)
32: 90 Degree head.
Be able to add a 90 deg. tool so the user representation is in the correct orientation. When I program a 90 head I usually bring it in as existing component so I can see where it may hit. If I add it as user representation to my tool it isn’t always at the correct angle.
33: Related to number 5. I would like to add any parameter to the activities table.
Example = I had to make a VB macro to change my tool change sequence and tool numbers. I did this because I didn’t feel like clicking on every tool change or tool and change them if the part got moved to a different machine. I like VB and Scripts but I’m just learning about it and it takes me a while to figure it out.
34: I like “Copy Transformation Operator” .I would like to see something similar to it where I can copy a pocketing operation and a multi-axis flank contour 5 or so times in Z and have them compute at each Z level not just the original. Right now I have to make two machining operations at each Z level. If I have 10 levels that’s 20 operations. If I make a mistake on an approach I need to change all 20 or make the change in the original two and copy and paste again.
35: Have Catia Holders defined with more than 5 stages and allow for radius .Possibly even using Sketcher or existing catparts. I like user representation but it creates another file I have to keep up with and store.
36: Plunge Roughing
a) need feedrate control between passes. I may not want to rapid up I might want
feed up at a specific feedrate.
b) I would like to be able to offset from my contour Instead of running on the centerline
37: Multi-pocketing. Select multiple boundaries in pocketing and allowing one machining operation to cut multiple pockets. It would keep from having to edit multiple tool entry and exit macros.(the roughing operations you can’t control
entries very well)
38: Better Log files. At the bottom of the file have a list of all errors, warnings ect.
39: I would like to have logic in my pptables (if then , else statements. ect.) or even inside catia
40: I would like more control of my tool entries on roughing and others machining operations that use “automatic” entries.
The following contributed by Philip Barna
41: On the design side of Catia, I only wish it worked as seamless as Solidworks. A lot of great features in Solidworks are not in Catia.
42: Boy I miss the simplicity of MasterCam and the Get-er-Done quickness it has to offer. Anyways, so far in Catia the NC side of things are different for me.
43: Need better docs, and tutorials.
Understanding the strategy, picking the geo and tooling options were straight forward. Getting the hang of those macros for tool entry and exit was a different story.
I understand it now more and I am learning to catalog the ones I use most to retrieve them form time to time.
44: PPTables here need a fully, I said FULLY descriptive instruction Manual.
I want to know what Dialog box cells in Catia are describable in the pptable and which one are not. And where is it exactly that the ones described in the help files come from in Catia dialog boxes.
summation
enjoy Catia. It has it all. Design, Assembly’s, Drafting and NC. Total control and I get to stay in one environment. The ease of use is wonderful but no cam. Catia is getting close to that. Little by little, bit by bit, picking away at it until it all makes sense.
The following contributed by Dave Frank
45: I wish Dassault had a help desk for general how to questions,
To get users up to speed fast, rather than leaving it up to business partners. The business partners, are good for classroom, on site, smart team, VB scripting, machine, CE, and post building for the small user.
Things clearly identified as problems on the Coe Forum, I could go on.
I see no reason to stop at 10, or 20. There is interconnectivity between modules.
Lets each come up with additions to the list of issues, and use our voices to get them fixes.
I got to meet the managers of software development, for NC manufacturing, and Delmia, at the Delmia conference in Detroit. These are good smart people. We had a one hour meeting, where I showed them the kind of parts we are making, the kinds of machines we are using, and some of the complex tooling setups, with 90 degree heads on 5-axis machines. I gave lot of feedback on Catia VS Vericut, not just Machine simulation, but also gouge detection using Video. They told me that they were motivated to help, and discussed channeling ideas thru the partners. It was too short a meeting, but I learned some things, and opened the door.
Many of you are ahead of me with tube time. I spend last two years only 20% Catia.
So I admit I am a little green. I don't see that as a problem. The good ideas come from programmers, be it UG, Mastercam, NCL, V4, V5, whatever
I am fortunate that my manager supports training, and my COE and Vericut forum collaboration.
I inivite anyone to check it out,

Hi Dave,
Have you thought about forming RUG for california based nc-programmer? Since I have checked in members directory most of are in socal. Also, I would like see some enhancement in the enhancement submitting section for attaching a jpeg file since a pic can say more than what user try to explain in words.
Thanks

Hey Samarinder, I used to work at GKN - Bandy. I'm at GKN - Monitor on Long Island now.
Although, I am not currently in CA, I could possibly make it to a meeting in LA.
Thanks for the invitation Dave, and I hope we can make something of this.

.
I got a RUG startup kit
.
over 50 pages
Once I got the part about getting a liability insurance policy, I stopped in my tracks.
.
This is for people with good Ideas and no time.
I work 3400 hours a year also.
We should not need to go to Orlando, or wait once a year.
I want to, and probably will.
but what about the guys who can't
what about the guys that are pulling 12-15 hour days.
They don't want to type all their Ideas in.
I hope The DPC guys help out also.
I am not trying to go around them.
I hope they can set up the live meeting with My DS guy.
Just simplify the process, and get us to join heads, like we all worked in the same company, and we sitting in a conference room.
We can do it.
we have the technology

Dave - A lot of the stuff in the RUG Startup Kit are templates, so in case you are really organizationally compulsive, you don't have to recreate these things. Although COE has no real affiliation with any RUG, COE can offer some benefits, which can include:
- Helping you contact other CATIA customers in your region
- Providing trinkets to your attendees
- Providing an easy to use web presence
If you want to investigate further, contact COE HQ, and/or post a question in the RUG discussion area. Other RUG leaders are typically generous about sharing their lessons learned. |

| Dave - I am told by our COE HQ folks that we can provide space on the COE website for any RUG, controlled access, and an easy to use tool or interface so you can readily create or change the content. You can announce upcoming meetings, agendas, etc. Don't be shy about calling 1-800-coe-call or email to coe@coe.org for more info. |

Mr Perlman,
Can you ask Marc Saracco if a web meeting like the ask the expert if feasable?
once I compile some of this, than we can do a "ask the expert user" meeting.
If not, I will look into live meeting.
Eduardo,
Stay tuned. you will be able to participate!! Thru the web, one way or another.
Philip,
wellcom aboard. We now have a band of bifermainia brothers. (you, Roger, and myself)
Dead line ? lets see how this develops. Give others a chance to weight in.
I am looking for 12 angry men, that can't take it anymore.
I hope to do this at least a month before Orlando COE.
I want to use this MFG forum, as much as possible, and permitted.
Don't like to type, Communicate better with your hands in your pockets?
Get and IPOD and make a mp3 and upload it to our FTP site.
Get a camcorder. shoot your Idea, and mail me the dvd
I can call people, record with my Ipod, and have my secretary (Mrs. Frank) key it it.
What I think will work, is to keep Ideas as seperate threads.
I will add the ideas to the list, and editing the starting post, and adding links to threads
That way there will be one plase to look as the top ten grows, and a launch pad for getting to each Idea.
I plan on making some simple parts that demonstrate the features DS will need to bang on.
Any on who wants to volenteer to do one themselves, let me know.
I plan on making a 500 x 500 inch CGR killer part. Lots of volume and features
use the automation to rough and finish. Keep banging till it dies.
Breaks over, gota go

Mr. Frank - Please would you communicate with Mark Chitjian and/or Jim Barkelew? These Volunteers are COE DPC Chairpeople for Manufacturing, and are the ones who deserve the most credit for facilitating the great COE member requirements in the NC field into DS implemented CATIA improvements. I am hoping that you find that you will want to work together and take advantage of their leadership, rather than create some competing activity. You can find their contact info by navigating through ABOUT COE tab, Leadership, Development Planning Council. |

Rich
I sense you think I am stepping on COE's toes. Not at all.
COE is doing a great job. especially Mark Chitjian and/or Jim Barkelew
I have seen the breakdown the accompleshed last year, from my friends that got to go to Las Vegas. I am green with envy that I was not there.
This is meant for Dassault. This is a win win.
I met Patrick Merlat, and Patrick Touron at the Delmia show
They told me that they are in the buisness of creating better software to sell.
They want Ideas, thru Coe, business partners, whatever.
Here's the deal
Not everyone has the time, or the inclination to do it the COE way.
Not everyone gets to go to the annual conference.
Not everyone gets to go on the internet.
There are people with good ideas, that don't want to type all this crap in.
a gentleman called me 7am this morning to tell me just that. He is in.
I spoke several others yesterday, that like this approach.
they want a web live meeting.
you can say in an hour what it takes a day to type.
People are too polite here on the forum
the whole world is watching. They hold back
Privately, they want to scream
They don't want to wait 3 years to swap a drive surface, or get a better tree.
Why cant we use simple apt macro's
Why can't we do more with VBA?
They want to have this discussion more than once a year at coe,
more like every 2-3 months. without getting carpo tunnel syndrome
COE does a top ten. we see 30 things that need immediate attention
NC manufacturing people feel at that rate, the aerospace boom will be over
We need better software now.
Dassault needs to hire a some more developers.
Look, this is similar to walking up to a machinist, and he tells you that tool 22, you have to slow down the feed to 20% in the corners, and the machine shakes. You ask, why didn't you make out a NC proof report. They say it's too much work to fill out a NCPR, and nothing will probably get fixed anyway, so why bother. Let somebody else do it. I'm busy. I have supervisors that won't fill out a NCPR. They call, or wait until I walk by. "hey dave, did you know that I can't have a Y less than 0 on a g26 e4 ?
I myself, will call my salesman 5 times before I send an e-mail
Nuff Till Monday
Have a good one

Sadly not all NC guys live in the good 'ole US of A. Bit shortsighted methinks. Good idea, don't get me wrong, just impractical. I'd love to hop on a jet and come joing the fun, or join a webinar but i live in Australia. ~17 hrs difference to you guys.
I like the ideas, really do, i've got a PMR/enhancement list as long as my arm, and we need somewhere good to vent our frustrations. it'd be good if we knew Dassault were listening. I'm a convert from PowerMILL, They have the best support teams & ethics i've ever encountered. I feel that if a company has failed somewhere with their product then they should accept it, not want to hide it! Hiding it only suits the stock market, not the paying customers.

Mark, and Jim
If you want to drive this thing, feel free. you may have more experience, and time. I only have the passion. and the connections KK, and Mark Teneyck have already set up for me.
If you want to stay clear, my Delmia, and / or / Dassault Area Manager of Channel Sales will set it up. along with the communication to France. The important thing is that it is a live web meeting, where all in the group can hear, and each can take turns speaking. That is what everyone is excited about.
we already have enough quality programmers, and I mean power users. and I am curtain it will double by the end of next week
I have spoken to many of the programmers, thru e-mail or directly. all are eager for better software.
I see this as having a beginning, and an end. The will always be ER's, but right now, all the power users, have the same list.
I asked KK to see if we can get the Dassault Developer at the webinar, rather than receive the results. if so, once the Dassault Developer states that he understands the problem, we can move on the next item.
I see at least 3, 1-2 hour meetings needed to cover the material I anticipate
The Kickoff meeting is the most important.
what we have is wish list what is needed is some idea of Dassault's schedule.
it may actually be easier for Dassault to gang bang ( add lots of people) to the project, and get it done in 6 months rather than stretching it out over the next few years.
