After searching the forum for how to renumber spec tree elements, I found that it has been asked twice about 4 years ago and never answered, so I am betting that there is no V5 function to do this.

But just in case someone has found a way...

I would like to renumber the elements in the spec tree in there history order.  After you try a few ways to make a surface and then delete the elements because the idea was NG, you start to get elements such as "boundary.452," or "extract 523." when it may be only the 100th boundary that has not been deleted.

Any way to renumber them after the model is done?

Not a huge problem, just like to have the spec tree neat and clean for easy modification.

Well, you could do it with scripting provided you did not change a single name. Catia does not know chronological order other than name.###
But i really cant see why you would want to do this? I label the geometry if it is of great importance and items are broken down into geometric sets.

I agree with Derek. It is better to break surfaces into sets and name critical pieces than worrying about renaming. However, it would not be difficult to write a VBA code to do so. CATIA actually does know the chronological order by the way it stacks items, I believe. If I navigate the tree by item, i could quite easily renumber them in order.
