I just installed the Windows XP SP3 on my workstation last night and now when I save out a bill of materials (V5 R16 SP4) to an Excel file, the Excel file shows up empty.  I can save out a text file no problem.  When I save out the same bill of materials using V5 R17 to an Excel file, it works.  Is it possible XP SP3 messed this up or is there a setting that somehow got switched?  I never had this problem before until I installed the XP SP3.  Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas?  I've got one other thing I am going to try in the meantime.

Um, I remember back in the day saving out to excel files would fail unless you typed the filename with the .xls extension. Doesn't sound like that's your problem though. The only other time I can think of that I get such erratic behavior between versions is when there are "/" or "\" characters involved in part numbers and/or instance names and/or descriptions. That's all I can think of offhand. Good luck.

Mike,

We had the same problem here. The weird thing was that every one of out PC's did the same thing with the exception of one. We looked at all kinds of things, and never did figure it out. We ended up having to have one of our designers create BOM's for all of our users from his seat. Nice, huh? Well, we have switched to 64 Bit XP, and the "Analyse Bill of Materials" function works fine on all 4 of our new boxes. It exports to Excel just fine. I would be interested in knowing whether rolling back to SP2 for windows fixed the problem.

Thanks Gord.  About the same time this problem arose, I had also installed R18 but I was pretty sure it was XP SP3 that created the problem.  I just need to get on R17 100% (I perish the thought of updating all the library remove bodies
