I want to give my engineers an option to using CATIA/SmarTeam remotely other than via straight VPN to their local machines.  I've started investigating remote desktop to allow users to connect to their workstation to perfrom task. Is anyone else doing this? It works great... in high bandwidth situations. Unfortunately, the reality of avalible bandwidth is quite unpredictable, and generally poor. (hotels, airports, etc.)

I've also noticed some other software created for remote desktoping.  I have no idea if they would perform faster than Remote Desktop. What are you using?

We did some testing of running Catia and SmarTeam on the Citrix - works great through the VPN. Also, for the IT personel we installed Remote Desktop' on the citrix which allow to connect to any machine on the network through VPN/Citrix and performance is much better than regular remote desktop with VPN.

This is sort of off your topic, but are you guys hosting your licenses on a remote LUM server, or on the user's desktop? I ask because we access our production machines remotely (they're physcially located in our data center). What we found was that when the instances of CATIA were brought up in Remote Desktop they wouldn't pick up a license from the LUM server. It was clear that CATIA (V5R16) was aware that we were accessing the machine remotely because the License tab in options indicated as much.

This was frustrating because now we have instances of LUM running on each of these production machines. Instead of being able to manage our licenses centrally. So if you're able to get CATIA to work in this manner I'd be really interested to know what your set up is. Maybe I was just doing something wrong.

Neil, check out HP's Remote Graphics System (RGS) software it's pretty impressive & needs much less bandwidth than remote desktop.
