Greetings,

At my company, the current practice is for our Industrial Designers to create a .dxf of artwork to be applied to products.  This .dxf is then imprted into CATIA and the drawing of the part is created with the artwork.  One of the problems is the actual creation of the .dxf from an ID perspective is tedious, and engineering has had numerous issues with scale factors, huge files, broken lines etc. therefore I am investigating using .pdfs which are already created for artwork approvals. Is anyone else using .pdfs in this manner? What is everone else doing in this scenario? Pros/Cons? Thanks for your time and effort.

Hello,
At my company, we generally do not do the artwork drawings in Catia. We use Freehand for that. Freehand is a really nice graphics program, but is more or less not being supported anymore. If you are interested in going this route, I would suggest using Adobe Illustrator instead of Freehand.
Anyway, one problem with using DXFs for importing artwork is that I do not think DXFs can really make curves. From my experience, they approximate curves with hundreds of tiny lines. This is probably what is causing the huge file sizes.
Your comment about using PDF files is interesting. Are you planning to import the PDF file into a Catia drawing?

Thanks

You might be better off importing a bitmap via Sketch Tracer and then creating nice clean curves by eye.
