Can anyone explain why V6 is using database and objects instead of the current file system?

Probably has something to do with making CATIA more code friendly and accessible over the internet.
I'm guessing and hoping someone that knows what they are talking about will set me straight.

Let's hope it solves some of the issues with saving products...structure exposed, publication exposed, PVR, technological packages, etc. Too many methods, too easy to lose data, too hard to load properly, etc. I am hoping that at least one reason for the database objects are to implement one method that properly manages your product data...?

I saw some presentations.
There are many reasons. IP (Intellectual Property) protection is also another one.
Real configuration management, much easier concurrent engineering, lighter geometries.
Roger, if I find some of the lists I saw I'll share.

Here's a article that I found - http://www.mcadonline.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=513

I copied and pasted the conclusion

In conclusion, V6 and its infrastructure are massive releases from Dassault Systemes. There have been some fundamental technology changes, a big integration and optimisation story and an innovative deployment of user interface across all products. While the company has never been short of vision, the integration and capabilities of point solutions has been, at times, suspect. It’s obvious that V6 is a big leap in pulling the product suite together, as well as really leading the industry charge to becoming a true web company and a platform to get into new vertical markets. Over 180 Catia products should be ready for V6 by May. MCAD will review V6 as soon as it’s available.

I want to get rid of CATParts too! Currently when you have built a complex GSD part, only 1 person can work on it at one time. (1 Catpart, one user.) So if you split it into several catparts, the interface between them is fixed and very hard to change at a later date. External links cannot become internal links and vice versa. Linking can only be in one direction. So adapter parts are needed also with "fixed" interfaces. A very inflexible solution. (Unless most aspects of your design are already set in stone)
So I'm for change!

Multiple people changing the same part at the same time is mind boggling.
But Dassault claims that will be possible with V6.
I wonder how long it will take for the industry will make the jump to V6?

I want to sign up for the Beta Test Program and see what I can do!  The demo's at COE were promising, so now my interest is piqued!  (Thanks Mike)

I to want the demise of CATPart. Many part types today are not real. Take for example the Multi Branchable bundle Segment (MBS). You will not ever order a -1 MBS. Also the -1 MBS if part of an assembly needs to have a different shape at each instance of the assembly. For example a light with pigtail, a fuel injector, or any other Equipment that supplies a vendor side connector that has a length of cable between the connector and the equipment.
