102 (PD-AUTO): Powertrain Deployment of CATIA V5

This session will focus on the impact that PLM technology and methodologies has had on Powertrain development at Ford Motor Company. Employing a combination of industry-proven methods, best practices and a Knowledgeware Lean framework, the application of CATIA V5 has resulted in substantial benefits in an attempt to leverage its full capabilities. This presentation will focus on the criticality of process mapping methods and alignment of technology to new process goals. It will outline how these tools have been implemented at Ford Motor Company production environment and enabled the adoption of new engine and transmission development processes.

 
103 (PD): Sheet Metal Design Implementation within IBM's Product Designer Community

Sheet metal design is an integral part of IBM’s mechanical development process and is utilized throughout our product line encompassing point of sale, storage units, printers, network appliances and our comprehensive offerings of servers and mainframes. Over the years IBM’s collaborative relationship with Dassault Systemes has refined the sheet metal workbench resulting in a product offering providing significant value to IBM’s mechanical design community. The process of collaboration and continuous improvement of the workbench and its implementation and deployment within IBM wasn’t challenge-free. We will review the evolution of the workbench within IBM; discuss the range of current utilization from card and board mounting devices, chassis, and checkout devices to EMC shielding used in many of our products. We will even discuss sheet metal workbench functionality within our shipping organization.

 
104 (PD): Avoiding Ambigous Modeling for Relational Design and Knowledge Templates

An Ambiguous Design is one that is overly dependent on boundary elements (Vertices, Edges), specification element orientation (curve direction, surface orientation), or component position to ensure a stable realization of design intent. This presentation provides an explaination and solutions to some of the most common problems a user may encounter while creating a releational design or a knowledge template.

 
105 (PD): Rolling Engineering to the Level of Interchangeability

In large, complex products there can be many changes that affect the form, fit and function at the lowest levels yet do not impact the form, fit or function at a higher level. This presentation will discuss how to implement the philosophy of rolling the configuration of the product only to the level of interchangeability using the ENOVIA LCA product data manager.

107 (KBE): When and Where to use KnowledgeWare, Generative Scripts and VB tools

Creating and implementing a KBE application using CATIA Knowledgeware tools is sometimes only the first step in getting an Automation project off the ground. This presentation examines the Parker Actuator Configurator – a generic KBE application that could “engineer2configure” multiple actuator solutions right from input specs -- deployed with a VB.NET user interface. Presentation will discuss the rationale for using knowledgeware tools, generative creation of CATIA models via scripts and few elegant KBE concepts (e.g. Smartpart) for solution derivations and generalizations so that many types of actuators can be designed and configured just by changing few input specifications. This presentation will also review how providing a robust interface that relieves the user of the tedium of manually setting parameter values, solving rule bases, and firing scripts not only automates the use of knowledge but also helps promote its acceptance in the workforce. Project challenges during application definition, code development, deployment and lessons learned will also be discussed.

110 (PD): Applying Lean Principles via PLM Technology

One of the most effective cost-cutting initiatives has been “lean,” a concept first applied by Toyota to manufacturing. Lean involves recognizing and eliminating waste – defined as anything that does not add value for the end customer - to cut costs and improve cycle times and product quality. This session explores the methodologies used to implement Lean principles in the product development process and the benefits that only PLM can provide. From reduced cycle times and cost reductions to increased innovative capacity and intellectual property protection, this session will illustrate the methods used to fully leverage both Lean and PLM technology.

 
112 (PD): Composite Evolution for the Model Based Definition

This presentation will review thirty years of design history and then describe future directions for supporting full Design Intent in a Model Based Environment using explicit representation of composite structures. Following that will be a status review of a PDES Inc. pilot program designed to demonstrate the ability to visualize explicit composite structure stored in STEP format via Adobe’s Version 8 PDF file format. Support for the pilot is being provided by PDES, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Adobe.
