Mora of Sweden to Optimize Product Value and Market Responsiveness with Dassault Systèmes
Leading Knife Maker Takes its First Slice of PLM with SmarTeam Design Express
Dassault Systèmes recently announced that Mora of Sweden, a global manufacturer leader in premium quality cutting tools, has selected DS’s ENOVIA SmarTeam and its quick-start SmarTeam Design Express package to launch and implement its new PLM business strategy, ultimately shortening product lifecycles and reducing time-to-market.
"We see SmarTeam Design Express as the cornerstone in our process toward becoming more market-oriented,” says Carin Nises, managing director, Mora of Sweden. “As a modern and complete solution, it will help us gain control over our product data and collaborate better across cross-functional departments. We need a PLM tool that will let us grow with the system,"” Mora sought an easy-to-implement entry package that will let them develop their PLM program gradually and flexibly support change as the organization shifts to its new market-driven strategy. They also sought to minimize implementation time and risk.
“Dassault Systèmes is proud to work with Mora of Sweden, a master manufacturer, with 300 years experience and a reputation of quality design and tradition,” says Didier Gaillard, managing director, Dassault Systèmes AB. “Mora exemplifies how, with the right PLM solution, mid-market companies can retain the qualities in which they excel while letting technology maximize use of that knowledge to sharpen their competitive edge.” SmarTeam Design Express (SDE) for Multi-CAD met Mora’s demands, offering a built-in methodology for design collaboration leveraging SmarTeam’s powerful embedded integration to optimally manage their SolidWorks 3D CAD data. The pre-configured SDE package was rapidly deployed, yet can be easily customized to meet future needs.
Using the SDE methodology, Mora is guided in building a best-practice PLM solution that will ultimately span the whole enterprise, across four divisions. SDE brings Mora core PLM benefits, such as enhanced efficiency and accuracy through routine reuse of data via the standard parts library or through automated creation of Bills of Materials from 3D designs. After introducing collaboration across design teams, Mora will expand its ENOVIA SmarTeam system to include marketing, sales, customers and other stakeholders; growing its PLM solution to further aid Mora achieve its business targets and maximize its growth potential.
About Mora of Sweden
Mora of Sweden supplies professionals with premium quality cutting tools. They are used in a variety of fields, but those who use them all have one thing in common. They want tools that simplify the job, are easy to handle, and are designed with advanced ergonomics in mind. Mora of Sweden has been living up to those demands – on an industrial scale – for more than a century. But the tradition of making knives goes back a lot longer in Mora. It all started back in the 1600s! Mora of Sweden benefits a great deal from that tradition, experience, and knowledge as it develops the cutting tools of tomorrow. Mora of Sweden uses documented expertise and a classic ability to meet the needs of its customers. That holds true whether they are found on construction sites, within the manufacturing industry, or in slaughterhouses. Or when they relax by hunting, fishing, or just enjoying the great outdoors. The product is always right for the job when it comes from Mora of Sweden – the impassioned, professional business partner who is meeting the challenges of the future with the zeal of the pioneer.
ING Renault F1 Team Races with Seemage
Formula 1, the world’s premier auto racing series, demands V8 engines featuring extremely sophisticated engine technology, which in turn requires designers to use the most advanced design systems available to ensure performance and reliability. This is why the engine development department of the ING Renault F1 Team began to search for ways to distribute CATIA® V4 and V5 designs more widely across the engine development teams as well as to users beyond the development teams for design reviews and the development of service procedures. ING Renault F1 Teams selected Seemage software (www.seemage.com) to deliver 3D CATIA design information across departments. Utilizing Seemage as part of its larger product lifecycle management (PLM) deployment helps ING Renault F1 Team realize its most competitive designs more quickly and accurately.
Although engine designers frequently handle 3D design data in their daily activities, this information has not been readily available to everyone outside the design team. Many others in ING Renault F1 Team also need access to design information for numerous tasks. The 3D CATIA model of the engine is the ideal source information for these kinds of tasks, but the information must be available in formats and applications that people who are not designers can use. The ING Renault F1 Team compared a number of different solutions before choosing Seemage for its performance, simplicity of use and cost.
“We were looking for a solution that could operate in a global environment, across all our teams,” explains Jean-François Plusquellec, IS/IT Team Project Manager, ING Renault F1 Team. “The people who use Seemage do not have the same requirements as 3D CAD users. We selected Seemage over the competition because of its excellent end-user productivity, its graphic and 3D animation performance and its highly accurate results even when using large assemblies or large sets of equipment.”
“Seemage Player is another important part of our deployment. More than just a free CAD file viewer, Seemage Player offers comprehensive navigation, sizing and annotation functions which are needed in our project to permit the high levels of coordination we require among our different departments,” added Jean-François Plusquellec.
The implementation of Seemage will consist of multiple phases. The first consists of combining online all validated 3D designs with corresponding 2D plans and supplier documents. In this phase Seemage’s advanced visualization capabilities are applied to associatively link together all the information so that users always have the most accurate and up-to-date view of the project. In the latter phases, Seemage will be the “glue” that permits new levels of interaction among the engine designers and developers and manufacturing, for example by allowing the viewing and interaction of engine parts in their assembly contexts.
This deployment plan for Seemage takes advantage of its unique ability to be implemented first as a desktop productivity application and then, using open XML, to be non-disruptively integrated into enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), product lifecycle management (PLM) and other enterprise systems.
