| Does CATIA V6 support working with CATIA V4 and CATIA V5 and non-DS CAD formats? Will we have to migrate all that data into V6? Will V5 continue to be enhanced now that V6 has been announced? |
|
First the simple answers: NO, you won’t need to migrate your V4 and V5 data, or your non-DS data. YES, your previous investment will be protected. YES, DS plans on continuous development and enhancement of CATIA V5 (as well as the entire V5 portfolio). V5R19 was announced on Sept 23. We recognize the nature of our customers. You don’t just switch at the drop of a hat. It takes time and needs to be justified by the added value a new version can bring. Rest assured, DS thinks COE members will see the value of V6 and want to use it. DS is constantly working to develop and illustrate that value so our customers will WANT to migrate because they won’t be able to do without the capabilities V6 offers.
V6 will be able read V5 and V4 data, of course. CATIA V6 is built upon the CATIA V5 geometry kernel, and the V5 transition process maps all CATProducts and other V5 data elements into the V6 data structure. DS will offer a V6 Adaplet for CATIA V4 data that combines the geometry migration aspect of the CATIA V4 to V5 migration tool with a mapping to the V6 data model.
Whether a company feels the value in migrating the models into V6 depends on their work processes and how their product lifecycle management solutions have been implemented. V6 will support hybrid scenarios, paying particular attention to OEM-Suppliers exchange scenarios involving V5 and V6 data. V6 will therefore support design in context, digital mockup and other capabilities in mixed V4/V5 and V6 environments. Modifications of V5 data, referred back to its original designer, for instance, will be made in the original design context (i.e. V5).
Not only would V4 and V5 data be usable in a V6 environment, but non-DS xCAD data would be accessible, as well, such as Pro/E, UG, NX, CADENCE, etc.

| Will I have to buy MatrixOne to use CATIA? Will we have the ability to run CATIA as a CAD tool with a non-DS PDM solution? |
|
Yes, CATIA V6 will integrate with other, non-DS PDM solutions. NO (Repeat: NO!) our customers will not have to purchase ENOVIA MatrixOne to use CATIA V6. CATIA V6 is open and able to work with or without business process solutions such as ENOVIA’s or competitors, such as Teamcenter or Windchill. CATIA V6 now natively includes and allows for full VPLM, including design data management, multidiscipline design and true concurrent engineering.
Dassault Systèmes fully realizes the heterogeneous nature of PLM implementations in the industry, and as such, we have made a point of enabling integration with other, non-DS PDM solutions, such as Teamcenter or Windchill. Such PDM solutions are supported and connected through V6.
CATIA V6 can be used successfully with a variety of PDM business process applications:
We have interfaces and partnerships (for instance with PROSTEP) enabling us to integrate with all our major PDM competitors;
For each PDM function, depending on the performance of that particular function and the integration needed with CATIA V6, customers will decide where this function should reside: in DS’ single platform or in other PDMs;
Specifically regarding Teamcenter, this Siemens/UGS solution is made of multiple separate platforms - as compared to DS’s single platform – so the integration strategy depends on which Teamcenter platform the customer is concerned with.
Also, a typical customer would have several systems containing product-related data key to engineering such as, for instance, part-sourcing/mgmt data, which do not reside in our classical competitors’ system. The V6 platform allows users to federate all product-related data, in particular those needed for engineering, leaving non-DS data in place and managing it in context with DS data. As mentioned in the previous question DS recognizes the heterogeneous nature of our customers’ product development processes and implementations. Not all product-related data is produced with DS applications. Non-DS product data is important to support effective product-related decisions. DS understands that additional non-DS applications will continue to be added across an enterprise that expand the scope of product information, and that this additional information must be federated.
