While at the COE 2017 Annual Experience and TechniFair this year, I must’ve answered this question at least four times: “What is the difference between CATIA V6 and CATIA for the 3DEXPERIENCE?”
Imagine 3DExperience as a framework that grants you access to applications based on your defined role. These applications are designed to communicate with each other through the framework. This framework is referred to as the “platform.” The is called the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
CATIA V6 is the CAD tool operating outside of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Releases R2009 up to R2013X are considered to be CATIA V6. The ENOVIA component is still there, but they are mostly separate entities.
CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE starts at R2014 and the CAD tools operate inside of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform because there are no files. Everything is accessed and saved in the platform.
CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE is still loaded on the machine as a thick client. A shortcut can be dropped on the desktop to gain direct access to this application so the user does not have to access it through the 3DEXPERIENCE environment.
Now, there is some confusion as to why some CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE functionality is ported back to CATIA V5 but not to CATIA V6. CATIA V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE are the same generation; functionality will not be ported back to CATIA V6. This is similar to CATIA V5. In V5, R21 functionality was not ported back to R16 because both releases are the same generation of the tool.
