Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM): Its true, your MOM was always right!

Are there not four more comforting words than “mom and apple pie?” They signify ease, acceptable standards, and comfort. What a nice way to think about how to bring a successful approach to the complex problem of transforming disjointed production practices.

MOM stands for Manufacturing Operations Management. It is the evolved process capability of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and provides a platform solution suite to create an integrated capability to manage all the critical operational functions of the factory. In the simplest explanation, MES focused on the information and tools that the operator needed to complete the production tasks. MES was an excellent first step while modernizing the information flow to the factory floor and operators, but it quickly became evident that the data being managed had tremendous value across the operation — not just to the operator. An integrated Operations Management system leverages that data across the operation and enterprise to provide a comprehensive view of performance. The extension of that “digital thread” from design, production, and an extended supply chain creates the agility, visibility and compounded cost savings that delivers real value across the enterprise.

Imagine connecting the data flow and requirements across all aspects of production operations. Standardized and common data will now flow from design, planning, order release, order execution, quality capture, dynamic and balanced scheduling, warehouse, maintenance and back to ERP and PLM for business consistency. Imagine this model duplicated across the enterprise, presenting a centralized and standardized capability to manage a common production process around the globe. What new level of cost savings and control could be obtained while rationalizing systems, pushing best practices to multiple sites, and presenting a new level of visibility to the business enabling a true and agile operation.

MOM enables that transformation, allowing corporations to capitalize on the advantages of a global economy and permitting companies to truly “design anywhere, build anywhere.”

The Apriso MOM solution delivers on that vision. As a core component of the Dassault Systèmes 3DExperience platform, it provides the capability, structure and extendibility to deploy that leveraged environment. The 2017 Gartner Magic Quadrant identifies Dassault Systèmes’ manufacturing capability as the industry leader. Dassault Systèmes is the company that has the vision and ability to execute, while helping manufacturers transform their production operations. Now that sounds like the “mom and apple pie” comfort required by a CEO when embarking on a transformational journey…
