More to Know of COE: Innovation in the Cloud

To round out the COExperience in New Orleans later this month Vaughn McDaniel, director of engineering services at Kärcher North America and Matthias Steinmann, senior director of central R&D services, CAX and PLM at Alfred Kärcher SE & Co., will lead the general session on Wednesday, February 27 at 8 a.m. Their session, “Innovation in the Cloud at Kärcher,” will cover the transformation of their business model and adoption of the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.

Both McDaniel and Steinmann have been with Kärcher for many years. “I’ve been involved with PLM and CAD administration for 20 years, so when we began our CAD benchmarking, we conducted a round table at a PI Congress PLM Event a few years ago,” McDaniel says. “This is where we met Charles Marsh who started involving us with COE.”

Steinmann was actually encouraged by McDaniel to participate in COE for the first time in 2017, which left him with immense interest in continuing involvement.

Fast forward a few years, and now McDaniel and Steinmann will be leading a session at this year’s COExperience.

“Kärcher is the leading provider of cleaning technology worldwide. Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG employs more than 13,000 people in more than 110 companies in 68 countries. Innovation is the most important growth factor of the company,” Steinmann explains. “About 90 percent of all products are 5 years old or younger. Over the years, and through collaborating with different R&D locations, we came to the conclusion that a collaborative system is a must have for the future. We first set up a benchmark for CAD-Systems and after that, for PLM. Dassault Systemes (DS) [3DEXPERIENCE] was chosen, as the users saw the solution as the most advanced and user-friendly option.”

For many companies, a large shift from CAD to DS can come with some growing pains, but the response from the Kärcher North America team was overall very positive, McDaniel shares. “Most people understand there will be challenges adopting different tools, but also have been through PLM implementation and look forward to the advantages a single global platform can offer.”

Needless to say, any company who is in the early stages of making this kind of leap can benefit from hearing from Steinmann and McDaniel during COExperience.

“The world is changing rapidly. These changes provide chances and risks for ever enterprise, regardless of age,” Steinmann says. “The new requirements of systems force organizations to work in a completely different way than they were even 10 years ago.”

For those companies looking for some advice on how to manage this kind of change, McDaniel and Steinmann explain that it is key to have a strong partnership with your internal departments, as they will be the ones to help you drive adoption and value statements to their teams.

“Just like change, the pain is also inevitable in many ways,” they say. “Being able to have support from the organization’s leaders is important. Also, starting small and implementing the new technologies, which are enables with the platform in phases may extend timelines, but can provide shorter time-to-value.”
