Academic Track Shines at COE Fall 2002
By Virgil Seaman
To members of our COE family, it has become abundantly clear the value contributed by the academic community to the technologies on which we focus. Many business enterprises have taken advantage of the expertise and resources residing in the academic community. It is for that reason that COE has supported an academic track and the following is a preview of what will be presented at our Fall 2002 conference in Tampa, Florida.
ACADEMIC TRACK (AC) Academic Breakout Sessions COE 2002 in Tampa, FL Co-Chairs: Virgil Seaman & Jeffery Maestas
Title: Collaborative Engineering Change Management with ENOVIA LCA Presenters: Yi-hsiang Isaac Chang, Travis Fuerst, and Klaus Peschen
Abstract: The Digital Enterprise Center at Purdue University, a partnership with Dassault Systemes and IBM, has conducted various applied research projects focused on product lifecycle management (PLM). Building on project content and capability as presented at previous COE conferences, this session showcases current projects related to data management and collaboration. In order to develop a more robust project environment, and to combine a wide variety of research efforts into one functional model, a mock OEM production environment has been developed. A hypothetical company, a mass-producer of SAE Mini Baja vehicles, has been created as the generic PLM platform for future investigation. In this environment, Purdue University will be able to demonstrate the PPR Hub (Product-Process-Resource) concept through the Product Lifecycle Management of customized vehicles. This presentation, a demonstration of collaboration between the OEM and its suppliers will show effective management of engineering change on the vehicle's front suspension utilizing collaborative capability of ENOVIA LCA in a multi-CAD, multi-PDM environment (e.g. ENOVIA and SmarTeam). Purdue University is an IBM H.E.A.T. (Higher Education and Training) program partner.
Title: Integrating In-House CAx Tools with CATIA V5 Via CAA Software Development Presenter: Dr. C. Greg Jensen, Brigham Young University
Abstract: Many companies have developed sophisticated proprietary computer-aided design, analysis and manufacturing (CAx) tools that have little or no graphics output, or the graphics are based on an old graphics kernel. Through the use of CAA programming companies can now integrate these tools within the CATIA V5 environment. Students at Brigham Young University are being taught the process of linking proprietary design and analysis codes with the CATIA parametric modeler so that an optimization engine like iSIGHT can be used to quickly explore the design variations based on multiple objects. This presentation will discuss the structure of the class and will give examples of past industrial projects undertaken.
Title: Curriculum Development for Beginners Presenter: Jeffery E. Maestas, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Tarrant County Junior College
Abstract: This session will cover the trials and tribulations of deploying CATIA V5 for student training. Getting started, curriculum development, hardware and software configuration will all be discussed in light of a new CATIA deployment. The lessons learned will be applicable not only to the academic community, but to any organization that is currently contemplating CATIA V5 deployment.
