Tampa Has It All This Fall!

COE's Fall 2002 Conference location offers a great new venue for attendees. We know you attend conferences for education, but if you can make time to tack on some fun in Florida, you'll only have to unpack once. Tampa Bay has it all.

A single day's itinerary might include breakfast at a waterside cafe, Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, a trolley ride to Channelside for shopping, and a Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Devil Rays, or Lightning game. Then on to historic Ybor City where the Cuban sandwiches are hot and crisp, the cigars are hand rolled, and the colorful streets are lined with fun. What next? White, sugar sand beaches, sport fishing, jet skiing, parasailing, boating...and, oh yes, the most succulent seafood under the sun.

Roar down roller coasters in the morning; row down the nature-rich Hillsborough River in the afternoon. Catch a ball game from the bleachers; catch some rays on the beaches. Go below the surface to view the graceful motion of the endangered manatee then surface to explore the rich diversity of Tampa Bay's restaurants, art galleries, and historic neighborhoods.

In Tampa Bay, you don't have to go far to find the original flavor of Florida. It's in the spicy scent of Spanish paella, a rich sip of café con leche, a healthy bite of a Cuban sandwich, or the delicate taste of fresh, local seafood. Tampa Bay's food and restaurant scene tells a distinctive story of its people, its past and its location. Even the trendy, nationally recognized chefs pay homage to the style of cooking Tampa Bay's immigrants brought to this area by building fresh, inventive dishes with traditional ingredients.

At the turn of the century, Tampa became known as the "Cigar Capital of the World" as thousands of Italian, Spanish, Cuban, and German immigrants flocked to work in the cigar factories of Don Vicente Martinez Ybor. Those same ethnic groups are still here and their traditional ways of eating and drinking are still part of Tampa's everyday life. But, during those years of living and working next to each other, there's been a lot of sharing of specialties.

Only steps from COE's headquarters hotel is Channelside, Tampa's Entertainment Destination. Exciting spots include Channelside Cinemas and IMAX Theatre, Pop City, Stumps Supper Club, Howl at the Moon, Banana Joes Island Party, Margarita Mama's, and more.

Have fun with history at Centro Ybor, the new shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in the heart of Tampa's historic Latin Quarter. Centro Ybor includes exciting new restaurants; retail shops; Steven Spielberg's GameWorks, where you can eat, drink, party and play; a state of the art 20-screen Muvico Theater; and The Improv Comedy Club. Don't miss the regular live music concerts in the Centro Ybor Plaza.

COE's conference hotels are right on the bay only 15 minutes from Tampa International Airport. Both are on the trolly car line and the new streetcar system.

Casting its dramatic reflection onto the Bay, the Tampa Marriott Waterside stands as the newest, largest and most striking hotel in the area. It's downtown location in the emerging Channel district and direct connection to the Tampa Convention Center makes it an ideal spot while attending the conference or staying on for pleasure.
