'Ask the Experts' Teleconference for COE Members

COE is proud to offer the first in a series of "Ask the Experts" teleconferences designed to further the educational opportunities for COE members. The first teleconference provided by COE will take place on September 11, 2003. The cost of this teleconference will be $49 for COE members and $69 for non-members. This conference will be presented by John Switlik, Associate Technical Fellow and will be titled: Geometric/Knowledge Modeling Challenges.

The teleconference will focus on the question of why does computing seem so hard to do? Despite the best efforts of many, there seems to be no consistent process to ensure successful implementation. Why do these issues seem to be more prevalent in advanced and knowledge systems? John Switlik will talk about a few computational issues, especially as they relate to dealing with geometry and knowledge. Some of these problems are inherent to computing and ought to be handled like the weather. We cannot manage these away; we can and ought to make provisions for controlling them. Switlik will provide examples of mechanisms that are necessary and will address how this area of research and development is important to COE members.

John Switlik's interests have an integration/quality focus for life-cycle control (Conceptual, Define, Produce, and Maintain). The involved methodology includes applied/computational mathematics (FEA/FEM/Statics, simulation/dynamics, NURBS-based numeric processes), knowledge modeling/management (since 1983), and advanced techniques such as adaptive approaches, statistical learning, data mining, and categorical modeling/processing. With a Professor Emeritus, Mathematics, Switlik has been exploring the basis for modern mathematical analysis as applied with the computational metaphor. He received his M.A. and B.A from the University of Arizona in Economics with focus on quantitative analysis.

For complete information about this teleconference and how you can attend, stay tuned to www.coe.org and your inbox in the coming weeks.
