SmarTeam Rolls out Complete Data Replication Solution for Global Enterprises

Smart Multi-site Provides Data Sharing and Collaboration Across Worldwide Company Locations

SmarTeam Corporation, a leading provider of innovative Product Lifecycle Collaboration solutions, announced the release of SmarTeam's Smart Multi-site, providing asynchronous replication capabilities for global enterprises working in distributed environments.

Globalization and the heightened pace of mergers and acquisitions have left many companies struggling to integrate and synchronize product development and manufacturing activities across diverse business units in different cities, countries and continents. Leveraging the innovation and product development activities is critical, aggregating and synchronizing the results is challenging. Fast computer systems, and fast networks, alone cannot produce instant data sharing and collaboration capabilities. Network bandwidth is challenged to keep up with growing volumes of data transfer and network availability becomes tantamount. Smart Multi-site allows enterprises utilizing SmarTeam to overcome these challenges by replicating each location's data and meta-data to all other sites, providing measurable results in performance and profitability.

"Recent security concerns have strengthened our customers' commitment to assure the availability of their networks and the priceless data and information they have stored on it. Having SmarTeam throughout varying locations worldwide on asynchronous replication systems through Smart Multi-site has become a strategic business benefit for our customers," says Avinoam Nowogrowski, chief executive officer, SmarTeam. "Smart Multi-site provides SmarTeam customers assurance that should one site go down temporarily, they can continue working on other sites until the affected site is back up thus enabling continuous product development."

"Smart Multi-site expands the concept of collaborative networks by ensuring that companies located in varying remote locations throughout the world can access metadata and documents simultaneously," says Avichay Nissenbaum, SmarTeam's executive vice president product marketing. "Utilizing the power of Smart Multi-site, product modifications and additions are replicated to all sites, enterprise-wide, allowing access to up-to-date data, documents and information instantaneously."

By automatically identifying the differences between the SmarTeam databases and vaults, Smart Multi-site limits actual data transfer to data changes, or 'deltas'. Active synchronization and replication results in exact copies of databases and vaults at all sites, with reduced IT staff intervention and significantly less traffic on the WAN. Smart Multi-site gives global organizations critical accessibility, while maintaining the security and integrity of its valuable resources. Accurate local access to the latest information provides enhanced collaboration resulting in greatly improved operational efficiency.

Perry Slingsby Systems Selects SmarTeam to Automate Product Design, Development, Engineering and Production Processes

SmarTeam Corporation, leading provider of innovative Product Lifecycle Collaboration solutions, announced that Perry Slingsby Systems, world leader in the design and manufacture of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), has selected SmarTeam's Product Lifecycle Collaboration software to manage its multi-CAD product development environment, and strengthen its change and configuration management capabilities in the production of underwater equipment.

"Management at Perry Slingsby view the SmarTeam implementation as a strategic investment as it empowers our engineers to take advantage of the full 3D parametric modeling capabilities, including detailing. SmarTeam is much more than just a SolidWorks file management system," notes David DuPont, director of engineering for Perry Slingsby Systems. "We plan to integrate our proprietary set of standard part identification systems into SmarTeam to help bolster efficiency. Our goal is to draw the model once, check it once, and reuse it forever. Sharing and reusing engineering data, information and documentation supports Perry Slingsby's key strategic objectives of efficiency and increased profitability."

"The plan is to use SmarTeam's solutions to enable anyone, from an engineer to a mechanic on the shop floor to propose a change to a part and have the system provide traceability of that request," says DuPont. SmarTeam will replace the existing systems that are currently causing long processing and routing wait times resulting in missed opportunities for improvements. In the past, great ideas relevant to increasing a tolerance or decreasing machining costs were generally missed as Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) arrived after a drawing was released to fabrication."

"Savvy manufacturers like Perry Slingsby recognize the production benefits and added value that complementary CAD and collaborative PLM solutions offer. It is fundamental to assure that the Product Lifecycle Collaboration solution of choice suits the existing design and engineering environments and processes in place," notes Uri Klement, president of SmarTeam Americas. "Perry Slingsby realizes that due diligence pays off as SmarTeam will work to meet or exceed its strategic objectives."

Perry Slingsby strategic objectives with SmarTeam include:

  • Robust configuration management for 3D solid modeling and engineering data
  • Consolidating multiple engineering databases for standard parts and materials into one easy to use and access repository
  • Improving ECO processes
  • Providing online traceability for ECOs
  • Coordinating engineering data and activities including Bills of Materials (BOM) between various offices in the United States and Europe.

Mechanical Dynamic, Inc. Launches Dynamic Designer Embedded in CATIA V5

Mechanical Dynamics, Inc. is releasing its popular Functional Virtual Prototyping product Dynamic Designer specifically developed for the CATIA V5 environment. For many years, Dynamic Designer's strength has been that it allows the user to understand the functional and performance characteristics of mechanical designs. Now users of CATIA V5 will be able to evaluate mechanical systems without leaving the native CATIA V5 environment.

Most organizations relay only on evaluating physical representations of their designs to verify they meet the intended functional requirements. However, physical evaluation of designs through prototypes or mock-ups alone is both costly and time consuming. To positively effect the bottom line, organizations need to evaluate product designs without these expansive costs.

Dynamic Designer now gives the CATIA V 5 user the power to easily perform Functional Virtual Prototyping of a product design without the extensive time and cost associated with the physical evaluation process.

Specifically, Dynamic Designer provides the user with the ability to perform activities such as:

  • Determining the torque necessary to drive a system.
  • Understanding the performance of gear driven assemblies.
  • Accurately sizing springs or actuators working in a mechanism.
  • Determining interference throughout the full range of motion of a design.
  • Understanding how different cam profiles effect system performance.
  • Displaying forces and the effects of collisions between parts.
  • Calculating system loads for performing Finite Element Analysis.
  • Measuring the engineering performance of your design without a physical assembly.

Since Dynamic Designer uses the existing product data in its numerical calculations, the CATIA V5 user can graphically display engineering performance data related to the product's operation as if a physical test were being performed on screen. And since Dynamic Designer is embedded inside CATIA V5, you can be confident that you will spend your time working on understanding your design and not on translating data to another environment.

Although Dynamic Designer is new for CATIA V5, the underlying technology is based off of ADAMS, the industry leading* tool for Functional Virtual Prototyping from Mechanical Dynamics, Inc. (*Daratech 2002). Since 1977, thousands of companies have performed Functional Virtual Prototyping with ADAMS technology to reduce costs associated with the physical evaluation of their designs.

Unlike most software applications that require months or years of use to see a return on investment, the typical payback period for Dynamic Designer is one use. To find out more how you can start performing Functional Virtual Prototyping on your CATIA V 5 Designs, visit the Dynamic Designer website at www.dynamicdesignermotion.com.
