The vehicle development process demands quick evaluation of new designs. CAE and CAD tools are essential in order to perform these assessments in a very narrow time frame. New design variants with desired criteria should be quickly created and analyzed. Geometry based topology and shape optimization can accelerate such a process when changes in body structure are automatically updated. FE mesh generation during topology and shape optimization runs should not require any kind of user intervention. The above mentioned requirements are fulfilled by SFE CONCEPT and SFE AKUSMOD. This presentation describes the feasibility of a vehicle development process where geometry modifications lead to a reduction for the interior noise of a full-trimmed car body model. In order to demonstrate this, a vibro-acoustic optimization is carried out for types of bead patterns in the lower dash region.

204 - Optimizing Disc Brake Design Characteristics

Light weighting and performance optimization are not exclusive of one another. In fact, with better informed design, it is the same thing! Key trends in automotive and transportation development today focus on vehicle light-weighting while demanding increased performance. Braking performance and brake assemblies are part of the "unsprung" weight of any suspension system and are a primary contributor to overall vehicle handling characteristics. Predicting suspension and braking performance is essential to safety, comfort, cost and driver/rider feel. In this session, Tata Technologies will examine a brake rotor assembly. We will take a look at applying simulation tools towards optimizing disc brake design, while lowering costs and enhancing performance.

105 - Contact Pressure Analysis in Abaqus on a Radial Lip Seal

The automotive seal must maintain a lubricated seal around the rotating shaft to avoid many complications that can reduce shaft life and performance. Simulation for seal behavior is quite complex.  Abaqus is a fundamental engineering tool that can help redesign seal geometries for optimal performance.  We were able to take general ABAQUS solvers, standard and explicit, and create static and dynamic models that replicate real work performance.  This analysis comes from the larger context of a new Abaqus customer that we provided with methodology development, training, technology transfer, and appropriate sizing for their hardware and Abaqus software capacity.
