What do you think about the pace and documentation of V5 NC enhancements?

I have 2 questions that are interrelated:

·        What do you think about the pace of V5 NC enhancements?

·        What do you think about the documentation of V5 NC enhancements?

The reason I ask, is there has been some discussion about the priorities of what DS is working on.  Some folks are saying there are no enhancements worth paying the ALC for since R19. That is not a dig against people that say that. I take that as constructive criticism, and an indication that there is work to be done.

I also know many users are using R20, R21, R22, and now R23. Usually, I hear more about the old requirements,  like swap a drive surface, relimiting points,  feeds by material database,  profile contouring. I here that more than new problems in new releases, but yes… they do exist.

I wonder… could it be that there are good improvements that are not clearly documented???  Or people only gripe about the bugs, and are not vocal about the good new stuff?  I know the program CD is supposed to have this info, but when I checked the program CD list of “What’s new”  in the past….. it looks like only 20% of what is new is documented.    I also know at COE, we get a good briefing of what is new on a high level.

So the question is….. is it worth asking  Dassault for a comprehensive list of what is new? Not just the big picture stuff but everything.  Would you like to see a run down this list in a web session?

Being a V6 user, we can see what is new from V6-2011 to 2013X,  and there is a lot of work done.

  1. Are better release notes important?
  2. Do you have enough decision making information on why migrate to a higher version of V5?
  3. What do you think about the pace of V5 NC enhancements?

Seriously thou, I believe that there is a change notice as to what was fixed or enhanced before you upgrade.
I have never seen it but I am told it exists for every Sp. Stability info may have to come from the forum here. User’s reactions to it who are currently using it. You could start a thread. It would be a good topic.

So far so good for me on R22 Sp4. Only been a month or so. But have had good luck. Been mostly in the design end of it. MFG only a bit. Too soon to tell there. Playing with R23 when I can but nothing to report yet.

Q 1: Too slow. Some still do not exist we have been asking for. After all that has been talked about, some still get passed up at every revision. (actually I would be happier to see the bugs fixed before any enhancements, ones that work)

Q 2: Documentation seems to be the same on every release. It would be nice if when releasing the documentation it worked with the current Java for one.
And the enhancements to be not only migrated into the documentation but also in a separate section for every revision. You could then go there first to see all of them since the last revision and see how DS expects them to work, fully explained.

Yes, we do need decision making information

I did some digging… and this is what I found out. In the “online documentation” that comes in the installation CD box, …. Each section has a what’s new section. So starting with NC infrastructure, and then NC Manufacturing Verification, then NC Manufacturing Review… and so on, each major section on the docs has this what’s new list.

What I started to do is copy /  paste them into a word doc, so I can post them here. So apparently, there ARE pretty complete documentation on release notes.

I will try to post them here over time.

R19 was an amazing release.  So many great useable enhancements.  A lot went into that release.  Too bad it hasn't continued.

Phillip, we are on R22 R3 and it has been a real pain in the rear for manufacturing. Hopefully R23 is better. I'll be finding out shortly.

Conversely, selecting resources in the tree or geometry cross highlights in the Gantt chart. If an object is not visible in the PPR tree because the tree is collapsed, the parent node is highlighted.

New display options for the Gantt Chart

The display options for the Gantt chart have been re-organized. In determining whether you want to see specified or calculated times, you can now differentiate between how you want the time displayed for the parent and leaf node.  In addition, you can select your own colors for specified and calculated times. You also no longer must have your Gantt chart left-aligned; you can choose to have data centered within a column or right-aligned.

Moved options

The Consider Product Flow option has been moved from the Gantt Chart tab to the DPM > Manufacturing System Definition > General tab because that option only applies to the Manufacturing System Definition. For the user's convenience, the Display Activity Relations options are available from the context menu on the Gantt chart and are no longer part of the customizing settings.

Verification has added Navigation options

You can choose to retain or ignore the effect of a Hide/Show command on the visibility of a product or resource during process verification. Also, you can choose whether to see the first or last child process when navigating down. This option applies to both the Process Verification and Process Verification Across Resources commands.

This enhancement provides the Local Information functionality in the Rough Turning operation. In addition to the global offsets that can be assigned to the part profile, you can also add local offset values.

Angular Units (length per revolution) for Air Cutting Feedrate

In addition to Linear units (length per minute), Air Cutting feedrate can now be specified in Angular units (length per revolution).

End Limit Option for Grooving Turning

This functionality helps to define the end limit on the profile geometry of single flank groove turning operation and also provide an option for specifying end limit offset value. This helps to control the tool path on the open end of groove turning operation.

Tool Compensation Output for B-axis and C-axis

A new Tool Path with B and C-axis option is provided in the Part Operation editor. When this option is selected, the generated tool path takes into account the defined B-axis angle and C-axis option.

Compensation points other than P9 are rotated about P9 by an amount specified as the B-axis angle and will become a mirror image point about the turret axis in case of a tool axis flip (C-axis).

This highlight allows you to specify the bottom plane using a point for Pocketing, Profile Contouring, Groove Milling, and Facing operations. When you do not have a floor to define for a profile, you can select a point as the bottom and normal of the bottom would be taken from the tool axis. Any change in the tool axis would effectively change the direction of bottom (always keeping it perpendicular to the tool axis and passing through the selected point).

Extended Multi-edit Support

Multi-edition allows you to modify the common parameters of several Machining Operations of the same type. In addition to the operations already supported, this capability is now available for Pocketing and all Axial Machining operations.

Power Option in Axial Operations

This enhancement allows you to define the Power parameter for appropriate Axial machining operations. You can take the Power parameter value from the tool assembly (as in the previous Release) or you can define the Power parameter value specific to the operation.

Helix Approach Macro in Circular Milling

This enhancement provides capability to rough core the hole by Helical movement before a circular finishing path.

Option to Disable Stock Management at Operation Level

You can now choose to deactivate stock management for specific operations. The creation of the Output stock and/or the handling of input stock in toolpath computation can be controlled at machining operation level.

You can display the name of selected action and modification statement in the DPM title bar. When there is a change in the action and mod statement during re-load of project; then corresponding name gets updated in the title bar. This helps to see the current action and modification statement names without any additional action in the title bar of loaded project.

Simulation Positions in the Manufacturing Context

You can load the manufacturing context and get the products/resources loaded in the last assembled positions. This allows to see the current state of the assembly before that particular process. The 3D States and Positions are also supported in the Manufacturing Context.

Enhancements in DPM Search Dialog Box

You can show/hide selected attributes and search by specifying advanced search criteria in the Search Criteria dialog box. The ability to see only the needed search attributes helps to save the time as no need to scroll and sort through the non-needed search attributes.

Insert TSAs under Resource without behavior

You can now use the Insert template command to insert TSAs under resource if it does not already have behavior under it. You can also specify the number of TSAs to be inserted in the Quantity of Objects. This helps to make changes to process and resource planning on the fly without reloading the project or closing the Insert template  command.

OK, so there was the new  stuff in V5.......CATIA 5-6 Release 2013 SP4

So.... yes they are working on V6... but also V5!

Hi folks,

I am not sure. I asked "someone" to provide this... and posted the results.  Not sure if it is a mistake.

I will check on 3ds.com....but I am swamped.... so it may take a few days.

 

When I looked at teh   "what's new" section of R23, of which I FINALLY have installed is...... I saw not one documented enhancment.  Now enhancments are altogeather different then Bug fixes.

For the R20 docs, I actually went on the DS website, that any customer can do, and look at the :

  • Enhancments
  • Bug fixes

....2 totally different things... and the Bug Fix list was long, and detailed.... So to answer my own question"  Yes, DS documents it verry well. Just as good a ...Vericut release notes are....

 

Now what I have HEARD, is that there are few new functions in R22-R23....but a lot of fixes, and "attempts" to get the bugs out.

We have a bunch of contractors in shouting distance... and they all report that R22-R23, keep getting more clean, and bug free. Now I am sure some will have a different experience.
