How do you get a normal COE view, rather than a mobile home page, with Android Jelly Bean?

How do you get a normal COE view, rather than a mobile home page, with Android Jelly Bean?

Hi COE,

I just got an awesome new 10 inch 4g Samsung tablet to replace, my 3g 7incher.   When I access COE, the tablet has a mind of it’s own, and when I go to www.coe.org    it automatic goes to www.coe.org/m

I prefer to see the standard COE page, and the tablet is big enough to handle it. This is a new operating system also…. The goofy android names…. Jelly Bean.

Thanks

Your best bet is to run a browser that emulates a desktop browser.  My personal preference for this is the 'Dolphin Browser' app.  This browser allows you to manually set which page default (Android, Desktop, iPhone, iPad, custom) you would prefer to see and loads that version without any further interaction.

Here's what you do:

  1. In the address bar, type: about:debug and hit return
  2. This might look like it hasn't done anything, but head to the settings menu and you'll find new options there.
  3. You're looking for a new menu called UAString. Open up UAString and select Desktop.
  4. Return to your browser and head back to that pesky page.

That's all there is to it. Your browser will be seen as a desktop browser when you visit sites.

It isn't foolproof though. Occasionally you'll still run into a mobile site, but generally speaking they will no longer be a problem. Some elements of full sites might not work too, so be warned.

You can turn the UAString (user agent string) back, by simply opening up the menu again and switching. Leave all the other settings alone, and if you want to hide those extra options, then type about:debug again to turn them off.

It's worth noting that if you're lucky enough to have Ice Cream Sandwich, you don't need to do this, as there is a "view desktop version" in the settings menu.

If you don't fancy fiddling with settings, you could also try a different browser, like Dolphin Browser HD, which also comes with the option in the settings.

Thanks a lot Douglas and Phil,

I can't wait to get home so I can try these suggestions. 1 good thing about jelly bean I can use the voice to text while I'm on the forum so I'm happy for that.

Best regards, Dave

Speaking of mobile apps, COE will be launching a new app that users will be able to download off of iTunes, Android, etc.  It will have both general and conference content that will feed from the existing website, but far more user friendly than the existing mobile platform. We'll keep you posted on the launch which I expect will be in the March 2015 time frame.
