First Time

This will be my first time attending the conference and won’t
be able to make the orientation. Anyone got any pointers?

Hi Jeremy,

I can tell you what I do.

I get more out of the people you can meet there so I do things to maximize the potential for meeting people. And I bring at least 200 business cards. There are usually 750 to 1000 attendees.

The breakfast each morning starts a 7.  I like to get a good night’s rest. There are so many opportunities to meet, at the lunches, reception in the technifair, and breaks.  I try to find someone to have dinner with also. On the lunches, they put different signs on each table with different interests. They call it birds of a feather.

I book the hotel early, in the headquarters hotel, so I don’t waste time with taxis. One year I was in an alternate hotel, and that was not the best way to do it.   I fly in Saturday.  I like to settle in, and walk around the empty walkways in the conference area. Usually I meet some old friends and make new ones, as a few others do that (go early) also. One year on a Saturday afternoon,  I met the presenter on the topic of installing V6 himself. And then one of the Vice Presidents of Catia. That was interesting.   I also look to see where the breakout session rooms are so I don’t get lost.  The hotels they pick are usually pretty grand, and the conference areas laid out efficiently.

I study the grid, and mark primary and secondary sessions. Sometimes, there are last minute changes.

There are many COE volunteer that will be easily identifiable by the shirts they wear. Different shirts each day.  On the website you can see the names of the committee chairman, and other volunteers in each domain… so you can see who is who.   (About COE + Committee leaders)  Then click on the contact members buttons in each section.    http://www.coe.org/page/leaders

Many presentations will be available for download a week or so before the conference. Many are polished by the presenters on the flight out. Ha Ha.  I’ve done that a few times myself.

There is a Ask The Expert Video here   http://www.coe.org/p/do/sd/sid=1004&type=0

called Learn How to Leverage Your COE Conference Experience From Those Who Have Been There.

Bring your ideas and your problems.  There will be a future requirements session for each domain, and you can voice your bug gripes, as well as enhancement ideas. Pictures and files on your laptop help.  The business partners, will have their top gun problem solvers in the booths at the technifair.  So if you want to leverage you time in the technifair, Tuesday it is open all day, and Wednesday morning till around 1 or 2, so you can skip breakout sessions and add more time for that.

Hope this helps

Dave

Use what you hear in the sessions as possible topics for a talk you can give next year.

I find it much more useful to treat the sessions as research opportunities - rather than answer sessions.

And seriously consider delivering a talk next year.

I think you'll find that you'll end up making some solid contacts with some brilliant people this way.

Something else to consider:

Bob Deragisch(COE President) and I will be holding a session on Thursday afternoon that I would like you to consider attending. In it, we will be fielding input on how the planning committee can better the conference to met the attendee's needs.I would love to hear a first timer's perspective. (4/30 @ 1:50 in Rm14: Session#3148)

UPDATE:

The session(#3148) is now at 11:20 in Rm14.

That’s a great idea!!!

I will be honest, I’m somewhat new to Catia all together so I plan to ask a lot of questions and spending some time in labs and such.

I will defiantly make plans to attend. I might have to cut it short on your though, my flight leaves at 4:50 that afternoon. It was the only non-stop flight I could get without swapping planes and simply being in a mess!!! lol

Dave..........

Really nice description for a first timer.  Well done.

The only other comment I have is to not worry so much about taking 'notes' in the sessions.

Pay attention to the speaker.........drop off a card with him or her........ask for the latest presentation to be emailed to you.

Also.........if you go to the conference with a business associate........split up sometimes,  to maximize the sessions attended.

It's an awesome event...........I miss not being able to attend.

Regards,

Steve Bech
